Corrections, Adjustments, and Retractions

Corrections, Adjustments, and Retractions to news pieces are each handled slightly differently:

Adjustments and Corrections

Correction of incorrect information cannot just be made to an article with no separate callout. Readers must be given clarity regarding, specifically, what was incorrect. When this is necessary, a disclosure of the correction is summarized at the bottom of the story indicating the previous information, and the corrected information. Adjustments can be made to the article if they are not substantially changing the overarching message of the story. In addition, the date of the adjustment is reflected at the top of the article with, “This article was updated on “MM/DD/YY”.

Retractions

Retractions are made by the editors with a note on the front of the category page where it was originally posted. Retractions should:

  1. be issued promptly and prominently to correct inaccurate or misleading information in news articles.
  2. clearly state what information was inaccurate or misleading and provide correct information.
  3. be issued in the same format as the original article (i.e., online or in print) and in the same location.
  4. be accompanied by an apology and an explanation of what went wrong and how it will be prevented in the future.
  5. be communicated to all affected parties, including those who were quoted or mentioned in the original article.
